The Yorkshire 3 Peaks 12 Hour Challenge

Are you up for a challenge? How about the 12-hour Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge starting at Horton in Ribblesdale Ingleborough? This demanding 38.6-kilometre hike across the three highest peaks in Yorkshire is not for the faint-hearted, but if you’re ready for an adventure, then let’s get started!

The challenge begins at Ingleborough, the second-highest (hardest, although the last will be our hardest!) peak of the three at 723 metres. The first climb is steep, and the final section is a scramble up rocks, but the sense of accomplishment when you reach the top is immense. From there, the trail leads to Pen-y-Gent, a mere 694m.

The final peak is Whernside, which is the highest peak in Yorkshire standing at 736 metres. The climb is longer and the views from Whernside are incredible, which will include our campsite/finish line.

Completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in 12 hours is no easy feat, but it’s an incredible accomplishment. It takes determination, stamina, and a bit of luck with the weather! But if you’re up for the challenge, then gather your team, pack your backpack, and get ready to set off on an unforgettable adventure.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is not just about the hike, though. It’s also about the journey, the camaraderie, and the sense of achievement at the end. So, take your time, enjoy the scenery, and don’t forget to take plenty of pictures. And who knows, maybe you’ll be one of the lucky few who completes the challenge in under 12 hours!

History (according to chat GPT)

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is a hiking challenge that involves climbing the three highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales National Park: Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough. The challenge has a long history, dating back to at least the early 20th century.

The peaks themselves have long been popular with walkers and climbers, with Ingleborough in particular being a popular destination for Victorian-era hikers. The idea of combining the three peaks into a single challenge appears to have originated in the 1930s, when local walking clubs began organizing events to walk all three peaks in a single day.

The challenge gained wider popularity in the 1970s, when a local charity, the Horton-in-Ribblesdale Primary School Parent-Teacher Association, began organizing an annual sponsored walk to raise funds for the school. The walk became known as the “Three Peaks Challenge”, and over the years it grew in popularity and became a well-established event in the Yorkshire Dales calendar.

Today, the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is a popular challenge for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, with thousands of people attempting the challenge every year. It’s a demanding challenge that requires a high level of fitness and endurance, but the stunning views and sense of achievement make it a rewarding experience for those who complete it.
